What is an LMS?

LMS stands for Learning Management System. It is a software application or digital platform used to create, deliver, track, and manage educational courses, training programs, or learning and development (L&D) initiatives.

What is an LXP?

LXP stands for Learning Experience Platform. It is a type of employee training software designed to provide personalized, learner-driven education.

What is xAPI V2.0 and cmi5?

xAPI v2.0 (Experience API) is the open standard for recording learning activity as simple, shareable statements: who did what, on what content, with what result.
Instead of locking data inside one LMS, xAPI lets any system—courses, quizzes, simulations, mobile apps—send activity to a Learning Record Store (LRS), where it can be stored, queried, and reported on across your entire learning ecosystem.

cmi5 is the industry profile that builds on xAPI to define how an LMS should launch content, manage learner sessions, and track completion.
It standardizes launch data, a defined set of verbs (launched, completed, passed, etc.), and rules for when learners can move on – so packaged e-learning content works consistently across compliant platforms.

Together, they give you interoperability without guesswork: xAPI provides the flexible data layer; cmi5 adds the launch-and-completion rules enterprises expect from SCORM-era workflows, with modern, analytics-ready tracking.

Learning Templates is proud to have been one of the original authors of both the xAPI and cmi5 specifications; helping learners learn anywhere and everywhere.

Is this system secure?

Your built-in LRS uses OAuth-based API Connections and you can secure it with your own key and secret codes. You can use up to 256 character key/secret codes to secure your LRS.
If you want to run xAPI/cmi5 courses from a remote web site, that product will need to be published with your LRS endpoint, Key, and Secret after you add that domain name to your LRS Whitelist.
Any domain not in the LRS Whitelist will not be able to read or write data to your site.

Beyond the LRS, you can use reCAPTCHA’s from Google reCAPTCHA V3, Clouflare Turnstile, and hCaptcha and apply it to any form you create.

Beyond the LMS/LRS security, WordPress can be secured using services such as Malcare, CleanTalk, or WordFence.

Frequently Asked Questions

Change Log

Version 1.0.0

Initial public release.

What minimal server specs do it need to have to use Learning Templates LXP?

We built and tested LT LXP on a 4CPU, 4GB RAM, 90GB Storage VPS.
LT LXP was developed against PHP8.5 and MariaDB10.
WordPress had OP Cache, Redis, and WP_CACHE enabled.

What other plugins do i need to have a fully functional LXP?

LT LXP only requires you have your web site already able to send emails.
To prepare setting up LT LXP, ensure your web site already sends emails.
Beyond this, you may have other services, processes, or plugins providing features LT LXP does not provide, so you can continue to use those with little to no expected conflicts.

I want to migrate to LT LXP. How can I do this?

You can migrate any LMS to LT LXP by simply installing LT LXP in the same WordPress site and adding cmi5 Start and cmi5 End blocks to the top and bottom of your other LMS’s posts. This alone will enable those posts to report data to LT LXP’s built-in LRS. This can be accomplished using the free version of LT LXP – No developer required!
After that, you can wrap the content in those posts with our xAPI and cmi5 reporting and logic blocks.
Because LT LXP has such a different architecture to store data in it’s LRS, data in your existing LMS will not transfer to LT LXP’s xAPI database. This is not because LT LXP is an issue, it’s because almost no other WordPress-based LMS natively stores data in a standardized way.
Data can be transferred from another LRS’s as long as the data is mapped correctly against the official xAPI standards we’ve built LR LXP against.
We cannot emphasize enough that you test your migration in a staging site before committing this migration to your live site.
The final part of your content/post migration would be to use free plugins like “Post-Type Switcher” to convert your other LMS posts to any of the many post types found in LT LXP.
LT LXP provides a facility to import and export full curriculums via CSV, so alternatively, you could use our Export facility to export our sample curriculum and edit the CSV to recreate the information that you would import into LT LMS.
New and existing users can also be migrated to /updated using / imported into LT LXP via our CSV upload facility. this includes individual users and any organizational structures they may be in.
No matter if a user is an individual or in an organization, you can perform this all in a single upload.
Quiz and Question data from most every WordPress-based LMS are going to be a disaster to migrate. This is because those product developers have not built any data or database structures in their LMS products against any standard. Why? There is no LMS standard for storing data, but there is for xAPI and LT LXP is the only plugin that uses it natively.
Given that, not having an LMS standard for their data doesn’t necessarily absolve those developers from not ever being involved in developing a standard.
We, at Learning Templates, have not just been involved, but we’ve also co-authored the industry standards and specifications we’ve developed LT LXP against.
